I have owned boats since 1980. I completed the US Sailing instructor's course and briefly instructed for Club Nautique. It took too much time away from my own sailing so I stopped. I have sailed off this coast from Oregon to San Diego multiple times, including racing the last two years in San Francisco's OYRA (Offshore Yacht Racing Association) races. Trips to Monterrey and Drakes Bay are my favorite trips locally. I have singled handed to both places multiple times. I have sailed to and from Hawaii and crewed on two different boats that have gone around Cape Horn. Never once have I been on a boat that has had a person fall over board even though I was on deck when a wave in the middle of the night swept over and completely covered the boat in the southern ocean. Safety is important to me. Speed, that is better read, well trimmed boat, is also important.
No Ka Oi is more than a boat to me, it is a sanctuary I enjoy.
Why this trip?I am out of frequent flyer miles!
While I love having my boat in Hawaii and it has been fun to visit it every month since July '08, including a week in September, a week in November, two weeks in December and long weekends every other month. I visited Maui, Molikai Lanai and it is berthed in Oahu, but I miss my boat here on the bay. I met some nice people in the Ko Olina harbor and I will miss going there every month.
I considered doing the trip single handed but thought it would be more fun (easier) to go with some people who wanted to help and learn. Teaching sailing was something I enjoyed for a while at Club Nautique and this is another chance to do that.
The boat is ready, the crew is ready and I can't wait to have my boat back on the bay.
Maybe we will run into dolphins and maybe we won't run into a whale, both of which we did on the way to Hawaii.
