We left Oahu about 2:40 PM on Monday. About two hours before we left the Trade Winds died and a
light wind starting coming from the wast. We turned north after leaving the harbor and spent the afternoon
getting the crew familiar with the boat and putting up some of the running rigging I took down during the time
in Hawaii. The wind was shifty because of the island influence so we tried to get away from Oahu quickly.
We put up the large Code 0 sail and the spinnaker for a brief time, but we went back to the 130 jib after we
got north of Oahu. The wind became steady as soon as we passed the northern point of Oahu. We had good
easterly winds during most of the night and did more than 8 knots most of the night. Towards morning the
wind became calmer. Twice a squall came near us during the morning and we got good wind but most of the
morning the wind was light. It has picked up a little this afternoon and we are doing 5.2 knots over the
ground with about a 10 knot breeze. This is sailing in the tropics! (Wish we had air conditioning.)
This morning the skipper made French toast for everyone but Gautam went to sleep right after his 2 AM to 6 AM
shift and ate when he woke at 11 AM. For lunch Gavin made great tuna sandwiches.
Most of the crew is still getting "their sea legs" but everyone is doing fine.
Last night was beautiful. Around 4:30 AM the full moon, Saturn and venus were all visible. Venus is about
as bright as a street light! The moon is helping us at night now but it will rise later every day until the second half of the trip will be relatively dark. phil
